Remebering Carolyn Sessions Receives the 2015 LATM Lifetime Service to Math Education Award

With great sadness, LATM announces the passing of former LATM President and Executive Council Member, Carolyn Sessions. Carolyn was instrumental in the formation of and continued strength of our LATM organization. Her career was spent in working towards excellence in mathematics education throughout the state of Louisiana. Her presence was felt for many years and in so many different ways.

Obituary for Carolyn Sessions | Resthaven Gardens of Memory & Funeral Home (resthavenbatonrouge.com)

In 2015, LATM honored Carolyn with the LATM Lifetime Service to Mathematics Education Award. This award recognizes an LATM member for distinguished service in the field of mathematics education. The award is designed to recognize an LATM member who has made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of math education in mathematics and/or mathematics teaching over a significant period of time. Carolyn impacted both areas. In looking back on her career, it is obvious why Carolyn would be considered one of very few upon whom this award has been bestowed.

In 1989, while a classroom teacher, Carolyn was recognized by the White House as Presidential awardee in secondary mathematics for the State of Louisiana through the Presidential Award in Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). This is the highest honor bestowed on a teacher of mathematics in this country. In the recognition ceremony which lasted a week, Carolyn met the President of the United States, attended a State Department dinner, networked with other mathematics teachers around the country, and received a financial award to be used at her discretion. During her time as a classroom teacher, she felt compelled to further her mathematics teaching by joining state and national mathematics professional organizations. She continued work with those professional organizations throughout her career. Former students remember Carolyn for her classroom instruction and outside club activities. Perhaps most importantly, she is held in high regard by the parents of her former students for her dedication to learning.

Carolyn served on the LATM Executive Council for over 25 years. During her tenure with LATM, she served as President, Newsletter Editor, Department of Education Representative, and State Presidential Awards Coordinator. LATM has worked with the Louisiana Science Teachers Association (LSTA) for years. Over time, Carolyn has served as a conference chair or committee chair for many LATM and LATM/LSTA joint conferences. Carolyn, on many occasions was the glue that kept our organization together. She was extremely dedicated to LATM.

In her time at the Department of Education, Carolyn worked with hundreds of teachers of mathematics and with district curriculum staff. She led the development of the Grade Level Expectations and the Comprehensive Curriculum, as well as the transition to the Common Core State Standards. Carolyn developed multiple professional development modules, which were delivered around the state. She also developed “Self-Learning Modules” that teachers could use to understand and better implement the Common Core State Standards in their classrooms.

At the national level as a long time National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) member, Carolyn played a major role in multiple NCTM conferences held in New Orleans. A member of the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics (ASSM), Carolyn was elected secretary of the association and served in a leadership position for multiple terms. As a member of the state PAEMST selection panel for many years, Carolyn also served at the invitation of the National Science Foundation on the National Selection Panel.

Carolyn is an esteemed educator who impacted math educators throughout her impressive career and greatly improved the education of students throughout Louisiana. Our prayers go out to her entire family including, her husband Jimmy, son Blane, daughter-in-law Jaynel, and precious grandchildren Catherine, Hollis, and Christian. She will be greatly missed.

Remembering Dr. Stan R. Chadick, 2014 LATM Lifetime Service to Math Education Award Recipient

Dr. Stan Chaddick

In 2014, the Louisiana Association of Teachers of Mathematics began the Lifetime Service to Mathematics Education Award.  This award is designed to recognize a former LATM member who has made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of math education in mathematics and/or mathematics teaching over a significant period of time, and signifying the culmination of his/her career.

At the LATM/LSTA Joint Conference that year (2014), we were delighted to be able to honor Dr. Stan R. Chadick from Natchitoches as our first recipient. He was a most deserving individual after his lifetime of contributions to mathematics throughout the state of Louisiana. Now, it is will great sadness that we announce his death. He fought a long and courageous battle with cancer. We ask that you keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. Please see the obituary from Blanchard – St. Denis Funeral Home:
